A LITTLE ABOUT US

Balancing the pull of local food and the values of experience, Chef Jay Nutt and wife Jennifer MacKenzie run a European style café with a small village ambiance. Their small independent business thrives on their creativity and dedication, along with the support of knowledgeable and caring longtime staff.

Before falling in love with the Kawarthas, Chef Jay worked at Jasper Park Lodge and Toronto’s King Edward Hotel and visited at restaurants in San Francisco and Europe. His unique food philosophy combines an innate respect for fresh and interesting local ingredients with an appreciation of classical cuisine.

The cafe menu features fresh gourmet soups, salads, sandwiches and other delectable lunch options along with baking, desserts, salad dressings, and chutneys prepared onsite. A display fridge features gourmet lunches and dinners ‘to go’ including house-made soups, many of which are vegetarian, dairy-free and wheat-free.

ASIAN GRILLED FLANK STEAK
A less-tender cut of beef marinates to melt-in-your mouth tenderness with this simple but flavourful Asian inspired sauce. If you like extra sauce for serving, make double and transfer half to a separate bowl before adding steak. Refrigerate it until use and warm slightly in a saucepan or in the microwave.
INSTRUCTIONS
In a shallow dish or plastic bag, combine hoisin, soy sauce, vinegar, ginger root and chili-garlic sauce. Add flank steaks, turning to coat. Cover or seal and refrigerate for at least 8 hours and up to 24, turning occasionally. Remove from refrigerator 20 to 30 minutes before grilling.

Preheat grill to medium-high. Grill steak, turning once, for about 7 to 10 minutes for medium-rare. Discard any remaining marinade. Transfer steak to cutting board and tent with foil for 10 minutes. Slice thinly, across the grain.

INGREDIENTS
  • 1⁄4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1⁄4 cup soy sauce
  • 1⁄4 cup seasoned rice vinegar
  • 2 tsp minced fresh ginger root
  • 2 tsp chili-garlic sauce
  • 2 beef flank steaks (each about 11⁄2 lbs/750 g)

    This is a lovely place to go to for a filling, creative sandwich and fresh salad. I am a big fan of the egg salad sandwich. I can also vouch for the soups, coffee and scones- which are dense, buttery, and not too sweet, some of the best you can find in the area.
    I highly recommend the Nuttshell Next Door for lunch or coffee with a friend.
